Which is the Most Popular Crypto Domain?
Unstoppable Domains is the most popular crypto domain provider, with 3.42 million registered crypto domains as of May 2023.
Ethereum Name Services (ENS) came in closely behind with 3.25 million registered crypto domains. This is then followed by SPACE ID with 1.08 million registered crypto domains, and Lens Protocol with 0.12 million registered profiles.
How Big Is Unstoppable Domains?
Unstoppable Domains is the largest crypto domain provider worldwide, with 3.42 million registered crypto domains as of May 2023. It is built upon having a decentralized identity without being limited to a specific blockchain (eg. “.eth” on Ethereum).
Unstoppable Domains currently support a wide range of domain extensions, such as “.crypto”, “.nft”, and more, giving users additional choices to obtain their preferred decentralized identity. It has seen an increase in registered crypto domains by 190%, from 1.12 million in June 2022 to 3.42 million in May 2023. During that period, it has overtaken ENS to become the leading crypto domain provider. This came after Unstoppable Domains saw a surge in registered crypto domains in December 2022, finally overtaking ENS in February 2023.
One interesting thing to note is the sharp increase of registered crypto domains from 1.78 million to 2.98 million in December 2022 due to the hype over three and four-digit crypto domains, an increase of 67.8%. This came after a similar increase in demand for three and four-digit ENS domains.
How Popular Are ENS Crypto Domains?
ENS crypto domains are extremely popular, with 3.25 million registered domains since its first introduced the concept of decentralized identities in May 2017. This includes DNS names that have been imported into ENS.
The number of registered “.eth” crypto domains soared by 345.6% from 0.68 million in December 2021 up to 3.02 million in November 2022 and continued to increase to 3.25 million in May 2023. It gained significant popularity after the launch of its governance token, ENS, in November 2021, where 25.0% of 100.00 million tokens were airdropped to registered domain users, and another 25.0% were airdropped to significant domain contributors.
Space ID & Lens Fall Behind
Space ID (ID) and Lens lag behind in terms of registered crypto domains, with the number of registrations being 31.7% and 3.4% the size of Unstoppable Domains as of May 31.
However, Space ID has seen a steady increase in registered domains since its launch in September 2022, with a total of 1.08 million registered users in May 2023. Space ID saw a spike in registrations after launching its “.arb,” product in February 2023. The number of registered crypto domains went from 0.36 million to 1.08 million between February and May, a gain of 198.9% within those four months.
Meanwhile, Lens has yet to see a similar exponential growth of registered domains as compared to Space ID. Instead, it is seeing a slow and steady growth of registered domains since its launch, growing from 0.01 million registered profiles in June 2022 to 0.12 million registered profiles in May 2023, a growth rate of 827.9% in registered profiles. However, the low number of registered domains could be attributed to obtaining a Lens profile being invite-only.
