Choosing a TON Wallet

When choosing a TON wallet, considerations should include support for the network, ease of use, and security. TON wallets that are tailored for the TON network can include features like staking, managing subscriptions, and support for jettons (smart contract tokens on the TON blockchain).

Some top TON wallets include Tonkeeper, MyTonWallet, Wallet.tg, and Tonhub, along with multichain wallets like Gem Wallet and Trust Wallet, and hardware wallets like Ledger and Safepal.

Key Takeaways

  • Native TON wallets and multichain wallets that support the TON network enable users on the blockchain to manage their assets and perform transactions on the TON blockchain.

  • TON (The Open Network) is a Proof-of-Stake Layer 1 network developed by the TON foundation, and was originally designed by the Telegram messaging app.

  • This article reviews native TON network wallets like TonKeeper, Tonhub, and MyTonWallet, along with multichain wallets that support TON like Trust Wallet and Gem Wallet.

Top TON Wallets

The TON (The Open Network) blockchain has seen a steep growth in user count in the past year. According to official network statistics, the number of active wallets on the network has grown to over 36 million with over 9 million active wallets at time of writing. TON’s ecosystem includes projects like Tether, which have branched out to include the network, along with other new projects like tap-to-earn apps.

On TON, TON tokens are known as jettons, which are smart contract tokens on the TON blockchain. Like the ERC-20 standard on the Ethereum blockchain, the BEP-20 standard on the BNB Smart Chain, and the SPL standard on the Solana blockchain, Jettons are smart contract tokens on the TON blockchain. Jettons are used for DeFi interactions with dApps on the network, and some popular jettons include Notcoin, USDT, Hydra, and Scaleton. Memecoins like Hedgehog in the fog (HIF) and Resistance Dog (REDO)  are also growing in popularity on the TON network, due to its low transaction costs.

Like other blockchain networks, users on the TON network manage their assets via wallet applications.

What Are TON Wallets?

TON wallets are developed to interface with the TON blockchain’s ledger and enable users to manage their assets and transact on the network. TON wallets package complicated instructions into simple clicks, enabling anyone to use and explore the network, while maintaining full ownership of their assets on the blockchain.

You can store your TON assets in two types of wallets;

Hot (Software) Wallets

Using hot wallets that support the TON network, users can manage their assets and interact with DeFi on TON by simply installing software applications on their smart devices. Native TON wallets are developed for the network alone; they provide services specifically for the TON network and may include features like staking.

For users who have assets across multiple chains, there are multichain wallets that also support the TON network. Alongside assets from other blockchains, users can also manage their TON and jettons from these wallets. Hot wallets are generally designed for convenience and availability, although there is an added risk of a hot wallet being always connected to the internet and the possibility of assets being lost in the event its private key or secret recovery phrase is compromised.

Cold (Hardware) Wallets

Cold wallets have a security advantage over hot wallets, since they are not permanently connected to the internet and third-party applications and require the physical presence of the cold wallet in order to authorize transactions. Cold wallets are also non-custodial wallets, where the user has full ownership and control over their assets.

Hardware wallets like Ledger and SafePal support the TON network.

How to Choose a Wallet for Your TON Assets

When choosing a wallet for your TON assets, there are some considerations:

Wallet Security

Before choosing a wallet, you can do research on the wallet’s security standards by looking up their existing security audits to see if there have been any critical or major issues that have yet to be addressed. Critical findings, if not addressed by the project, means that there is the possibility of exploitation by bad actors.

Intent

Will you be storing your assets long term, or are you intending to actively engage in DeFi activities? If you are intending to store your assets long term, opting for a hardware wallet is generally a better idea as it’s more secure. However, this added security makes connecting to decentralized applications (dApps) more complicated, requiring extra steps.

In this case, you may opt for a hot wallet for your DeFi activities, which is more convenient as you can easily connect to any dApps anywhere.

Assets To Be Stored

Will you only be using this wallet to store your TON assets, or are you planning to store assets from other chains, like ETH and BTC? If you are looking for a wallet specifically to store your TON assets, choosing a TON-specific wallet like Tonkeeper can include benefits like in-app staking, or even digital content subscriptions.

If you are planning to use the wallet for DeFi activities like cross-chain swaps, or to store other assets like ETH and BTC, choosing a multi-chain wallet like Trust Wallet can make it easy for you to manage all your assets on one platform.

Support For Advanced Network-Specific Operations

Certain wallets support only basic operations like sending and receiving assets. If you are looking for a wallet to interact with DeFi on TON, planning to stake TON on the network, or trade jettons, remember to ensure that your chosen wallet is able to support these more advanced operations on the TON network.

Now, let’s take a look at eight popular wallet applications that support TON. In this article, we will look at hot wallets first, followed by cold wallets. The hot wallets are listed based on their popularity based on SimilarWeb data and the extent of their support for the TON network.

Final Thoughts

In the course of this article, we have reviewed several software wallet applications that support the TON network. The basis of our selection includes popularity, network support, and other miscellaneous factors. Therefore, we admit that this list is not exhaustive. Other TON wallets outside this scope can also be used to store and transact your TON network assets.

While choosing a wallet, consider your needs and ensure you choose a wallet that matches your requirements. Also, always do research on shortlisted wallets to ensure that they have no known security issues, and always store your secret recovery phrase offline, and ideally on crypto steel. Finally, hot wallets rank below cold wallets in terms of asset security, so it is advised that investors consider storing long-term assets in cold wallets.

Having said this, note that this article only reviews selected wallets for educational purposes and should not be taken as financial advice.
