Top BNB Chain Ecosystem Coins by Market Cap
BNB Chain is an alternative blockchain that is similar to Ethereum, capable of hosting smart contracts and decentralized applications. It was launched by Binance in September 2020 as the Binance Smart Chain, and relaunched in Feburary 2022 as BNB Chain. BNB uses the Proof-of-Staked-Authority model which has allowed for low transaction fees and higher throughput.
Compared to Ethereum which would usually cost hundreds to make a few transactions, BNB only charges less than a few dollars. BNB supports the BEP-20 token format, which is essentially the same format as ERC-20 but on a different chain, and transaction fees are paid in Binance’s native exchange token, BNB.

What is the BNB Chain?
The BNB Chain was previously known as the Binance Smart Chain (BSC) and the Binance chain. To enable BNB to grow beyond Binance, the blockchain was relaunched as the BNB Chain, which stands for “Build and Build.” It has gained market traction as an alternative to Ethereum because it offers lower gas fees and high settlement speeds.
The BNB Chain consists of the BNB Beacon Chain for governance, and the BNB Smart Chain, which supports smart contracts and is EVM-compatible. This lets developers integrate Ethereum protocols with BNB and users can configure applications like MetaMask to work with BNB. Do note that BSC is not a layer 2 solution, but an independent blockchain that can run even if the Beacon Chain is offline.
How the BNB Chain Works
It runs on a Proof-of-Staked-Authority consensus algorithm, where participants stake the native coin, BNB, to become validators, and if they propose a valid block they’ll receive transaction fees from the transactions within the block. Tokens on the BNB Chain follow the BEP-20 standard, which is similar to ERC-20. To convert ERC-20 tokens to their BEP-20 equivalent, you’ll need to use a bridge.
Exploring the the BNB Smart Chain
You can explore the BNB Smart Chain with BscScan, a blockchain explorer like Etherscan that lets you track transactions, verify smart contracts, and check the balances of any BSC wallet address. You'll also be able to see the latest blocks incorporated into the BSC network, lists of BEP-20, ERC-721, or ERC-1155 tokens, and even see the top accounts sorted by their BNB balance.
The BNB smart chain ecosystem includes decentralized exchanges, which use Automated Market Makers (AMMs) that leveraage smart contracts to regulate liquidity pools that consist of trading pairs. It also includes loan platforms to enable lending and borrowing, along with yield farming opportunities with yield aggregators. It is also home to play-to-earn games that have previously made the list of CoinGecko's top gainers and metaverses where DAO members can vote on improvement proposals to decide what's next for their worlds.
